EASY STEPS TO FIX NIK PLUG-IN CRASHES INSIDE PHOTOSHOP CC 2018

Google acquired Nik in 2012 from the San Diego based Nik Multimedia Software Company. Most importantly Google announced in the spring of 2017 that they will no longer support the Nik Collection. Additionally, in the fall of 2017 a  new version of Photoshop cc 2018 was released, as a result of the above actions the Nik Plug-ins failed to work with the new version of Photoshop cc. Once again, in the fall of 2017 DXO acquired the Nik Collection from Google and announced plans to release their version of the Nik Suite sometime in 2018. Photographers of all levels expressed disappointment, especially the beginning photographer. Therefore, follow along with these  “EASY STEPS TO FIX NIK PLUG-INS CRASHES INSIDE  PHOTOSHOP cc 2018”.

Nik offers seven plug-in tools for photographers with different requirements. In the beginning I found the Nik Collection to be indispensable. I continue to use Silver Efex Pro 2 as part of my options for my black and white conversions.

  • Color Efex Pro 4 for innovative filters with creative effects
  • Silver Efex Pro 2 for black and white conversion with creative effects
  • HDR Efex for high dynamic range
  • Viveza for tonality and color control
  • Define to reduce/remove noise
  • Sharpener image sharpener
  • Analog Efex for simulate analog film

The Nik Plug-ins are located in Photoshop’s filter menu under Nik Collection. As stated above, Google no longer supports the Nik plug-ins. Furthermore, DXO will not be releasing their version of the Nik Collection with updates and new features until sometime in 2018. As a result Photoshop cc 2018 together with your last downloaded version of Nik Plug-ins will no longer work. In the past, I never paid attention to the Nik settings until recently. As a result by changing the appropriate settings inside the plug-ins I found that they would work again in combination with PS cc 2018.

Nik Plug-ins and PS cc 2018

The following is a list of plug-ins requiring their settings to be changed to prevent their crashing inside PS cc 2018. Choose an image in Photoshop and select a plug-in, then follow the easy steps below for the settings change. Once the setting is changed click cancel at the bottom right of the page to return to Photoshop cc. Then select the next plug-in for its settings change, and so on.

  • Color Efex Pro 4
  • Silver Efex Pro 2
  • Viveza 2
  • Define
  • Analog Efex

The example used below is Silver Efex Pro 2. Apply the same steps for fixing each of the other plug-ins.

  • Open Photoshop cc 2018
  • Open an image from the file menu
  • Click the filter menu and scroll down to Nik Collection
  • Select a  plug-in, for example Silver Efex Pro 2
  • Do not select any presets or processing applications at this time
  • Scroll down to the lower left hand page and click the settings button
  • The “Interface Setting” window will appear
  • At the bottom of the window click “After Clicking OK”
  • A new window will appear in the middle of the page with an option
  •  “Apply the filtered effect to a separate layer” with a down arrow
  • Click the down arrow and select
  • “To apply the filtered effect to the current layer” click ok
  • Click cancel at the bottom right of the page to return to Photoshop cc
  • Choose the next plug-in from the list and repeat the above steps
  • When finished proceed to select your preset and/or apply any processing
  • When done click ok and continue processing in Photoshop cc

In my discussions with DXO, they have not decided if or how they will grandfather in previous owners who purchased the Nik Suite. While changing the settings it is noteworthy to mention that there are no updates or new features to go along with this version of the Nik Collection. Those who have been using the Nik Suite can continue to do so following the above easy settings changes. The landscape images above started inside Nik’s Silver Efex Pro2 by merging layer presets and continuing inside Photoshop cc until the final iteration was finished.
